Halloween can be fun and cause great excitement, especially for children. But does your dog find it quite as enjoyable?
Halloween celebrations can lead to a sudden change in routine for just one night with excited children in fancy dress knocking at the door throughout the evening. Strange sights, sounds and smells, no wonder many dogs find it disturbing.
If your dog is one of the many that will find the trick or treaters unsettling then prepare in advance. Just as you would for bonfire night set up a den, somewhere safe and cosy away from the front door where they can relax. Keep it a happy place by offering treats or stuffed kongs in there to help your dog settle.
Walk your dog during the day so that you won’t encounter any shrieking ghosts during your evening walk.
If you’re rewarding the trick or treaters with chocolate and sweets, store them out of your dogs reach.
In the past to avoid being disturbed I’ve put up a ‘please don’t knock sign’ and left a tub of chocolates at the gate. This keeps everyone happy.
But remember, should you go out and see a huge black dog prowling along the lane and hear a howl that makes your blood turn cold…..you’ll have met Black Shuck.
