Be careful your dog doesn’t “conk out”
It’s now officially autumn but summer is lingering, giving us the benefit of some cooler but bright and sunny days. It’s felt like a good summer this year; we’ve had some lovely long, hot months. But hot weather brings difficulties to the dog owner. Sadly, and all too often we see reports of dogs left in hot cars, often with fatal consequences. Some of us have witnessed this for ourselves this year, it seems difficult to believe that people still aren’t aware of the danger they’re putting their dogs in. For those of us battling the heat and trying to keep our dogs cool with curtains closed and fans blowing its felt like a long summer indeed. And now autumn brings the next challenge to the dog owner.
The magnificent Horse Chestnut tree in our garden which has provided some much needed shade for a nice afternoon snooze for sleepy dogs now brings its own dangers. For this magnificent tree will soon be dropping conkers which are poisonous to dogs and can cause a blockage if eaten. Acorns are another danger, for inquisitive dogs who like to hunt through the fallen leaves it’s vital that you ensure your dog does not eat things that they find. At Animal Magic we teach our dogs to ‘leave’ and to ‘give’ on command, these simple actions might just one day save them from eating something dangerous. If you think your dog may have eaten something they shouldn’t, always seek advice from your vet, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
So enjoy the last lingering rays of summer and as you watch the seasons change, always be aware of the potential dangers that lurk for our dogs. It’s now officially autumn but summer is lingering, giving us the benefit of some cooler but bright and sunny days.
